Five Simple Wardrobe Staples

If you’ve read my latest post about my current style mindset, you’d know that I am currently shopping my own wardrobe. While doing so I’ve realized that I have a few simple wardrobe staples that are always my go-tos.

At first, I wasn’t sure what approach I would take towards curating a capsule out of my current closet. But I decided to do a semi-capsule wardrobe by editing my wardrobe down to summer appropriate clothing. Since it is currently averaging 80° in Kentucky, I’ve realized it’s time to switch things up. I also realized that I didn’t own any plain black or white tees. So I bought two black tees and one white tee. I also purchased a few other essentials, like socks. Other than that I did not purchase anything else.

I’ve been narrowing down the pieces that I’d like to wear this season into categories, such as tops, bottoms, shoes, etc. This way I can curate outfits out of my current wardrobe. Since I’ve been doing this I’ve noticed a few things. I love stripes, neutral colors, denim, and loose-fitting pieces. All of these pieces are simple, but also wardrobe staples.

my simple wardrobe staples:

1 | denim

Overall, I have a simple style. But when it comes to my pants I’m not much of a shorts wearer. However, if I do pull them out they will be my American Eagle Ripped Slouchy Shorts. Otherwise, I tend to gravitate towards my American Eagle Dark Denim Jeggings, American Eagle Artist Crop Jeans (currently on sale!), or gray ripped jeans from Banana Republic. All of these pieces are so easy to mix and match with tees.

2 | basic tees

I love a slouchy, but comfy tee like this t-shirt in black and white, or this AE striped tee. Classic basic tees are staples for any wardrobe. They can be dressed up for an event, or dressed down with an Old Navy Classic Chambray Shirt to wear over it on a cool summer night. I also love this lightweight Banana Republic white tank top for those extremely humid and hot Kentucky days. Basic tees that are comfy and loose are my go-tos. I’m not into super fitted tops, so sometimes I purchase them a size up so I can feel comfortable in what I’m wearing.

3 | small cross-body bags

Cross-body bags have always been my favorite. Last summer, I purchased this bag from Fossil and I’ve been wearing it ever since. Honestly, I’m obsessed with this bag and anything that Fossil makes. When it comes to bags, a neutral cross-body bag is perfect. They’re big enough to hold your essentials, like hand cream, gum, your phone, and wallet. But small enough to not get in the way of everyday activities. They’re also a simple accessory to add to any outfit!

4 | strappy sandals

I love sandals. I’ve been eying some Birkenstocks for a while now, but I can’t get myself to purchase them. But until I do, these sandals from Target will continue to be my go-to for every season, but winter (of course). I love the color and that they go with everything I own. I wear a lot of basics and neutral colors, which you can tell by this post. So a little pop of color on my feet is always my go-to.

5 | baseball caps

Baseball caps became my best friend in college. For lazy Saturdays when I needed to run to the grocery store and I didn’t feel like styling my hair. And also for days when I was up way too late writing a paper and I had an early class the next morning. Baseball caps can be cute and stylish. They’re great for extremely hot days, or rainy days. Plus cute caps make a sporty outfit look cute, but casual. My go-to is a baseball cap from my alma-mater

When having natural hair baseball caps are a big no no. Still love these basoc 5’s.

I disagree! I have natural hair too, and I’ve been wearing them for years.

I agree with your wardrobe staples! I have always preferred cross-body bags. They are easy to wear and hard for people to try and steal, yes I think about that. I also like a good ballet flat. Thanks for sharing!

No, I agree! When I lived in China that was mainly my concern since pick-pocketing is huge there!
